1                      INTRODUCTION

There are tens of millions of domains registered all of the world and every day thousands of these domains expires. Many of these expired domains have history of high traffic to their websites. Such domains may have had thousands of links on popular search engines or listed on popular directories such as Yahoo or DMOZ and may have high ranking on sites such as Alexa. Building such traffic is time consuming and may take years. In addition, listing on directories such as Yahoo can cost $299.0 for mainstream site or $599.0 for adult sites. Though, Yahoo has free submission to noncommercial categories, but there is no guarantee and it may take several months. Yahoo receives on average 15000 submissions per day to these noncommercial categories, thus there is very long waiting period.

PlexDomain provides a toolset to search, analyze, monitor and register popular on-hold and deleted domains.  It allows users to search deleted, on-hold, and registered domains. Users can check traffic for these sites from dozens of popular search engines and directories such as Yahoo, DMOZ, AltaVista, Lycos, etc. Users can specify criteria for accepting domains, such as the sites that must exist in Yahoo-Directory or DMOZ-Directory category or have a minimum of N links to them or have a minimum of X rating on Alexa website. These searches can be done in foreground or as a scheduled job which runs in background. This scheduled job can be run on regular interval automatically. The scheduled job creates a detailed report and can email report to the user when done.

2                      benefits

Following is list of major benefits offered by PlexDomain:

2.1                     domain search

PlexDomain allows users to search domains that are:

·         Deleted

·         On-Hold

·         Real-Time Newly-Deleted

·         Expiring Soon

·         Available for Registration

·         Registered Domains

The user can specify criteria for selecting domains such as keywords, length of domains or if they contain numbers or hyphens. These domains are then used by filtering process that selects popular domains.

2.2                     real-time newly deleted lists

PlexDomain allows users to browse lists of real-time newly domains. The user can specify additional criteria for selecting domains such as length of domains or if they contain numbers or hyphens. These domains are then used by filtering process that selects popular domains.

2.3                     directory crawling

PlexDomain allows users to schedule a job that crawls Yahoo or DMOZ directory and searches for expired domains on each category. It then stores the expired domains and reports results back to the user.

2.4                     filtering domains

Once user has list of domains he searched from either keyword-search or deleted lists, he/she can then check those domains in popular search engines and directories. User can select the number of links for each domain in:

·         AltaVista

·         AllTheWeb

·         Teoma

·         Alexa

·         AOL

·         HotBot

·         Lycos

·         Google

·         DMOZ

·         LookSmart

·         MSN

·         Yahoo

The user can specify minimum number of links to accept, or if they must exist in Yahoo, DMOZ or LookSmart or minimum ranking of site on Alexa website. PlexDomain will then search all these domains and automatically purge all domains which do not meet criteria and highlight popular domains.

2.5                     power search for available domains

PlexDomain allows users to specify a list of keywords, top-level-domains with a set of prefix and suffix words and it generates all possible domain names. It then checks each of those domains against whois server and shows list of available domains. The user can also schedule a background job, which searches for available domains and then saves those domains.

2.6                     monitoring domains for availability

PlexDomain allows users to schedule background jobs to check for the availability of domains on regular basis. It then shows status of those domains and emails the results to the users.

2.7                     exporting/importing data

PlexDomain allows users export and import domains from list of domains to analyze. In addition, user can type-in data. These domains can be then used by filtering process that selects popular domains.

2.8                     multi-threading

PlexDomain uses multi-threading for searching and filtering domains, where each search is run in its own thread. This improves overall throughput for processing domains and reduce bottlenecks from serial processing.

2.9                     caching

PlexDomain caches results of web searches. Thus, when a user performs the same search it will be done much quickly. The cache results are kept for one or two days and can also be cleared by the user.

2.10              scheduling batch jobs

PlexDomain allows users to schedule a search or filtering task, which is run in background. The user can specify one-time or recurring batch jobs which are run on regular interval. The results of these batch jobs are automatically stored in a local file and a detailed HTML-based report is created. The user can choose an option to receive this report automatically when the job is completed. This allows users to schedule a job to search for newly-deleted domains and store popular domains for later viewing.

2.11              whois records

PlexDomain allows users to search for whois-records for registered or soon-to-expire domains. It also parses whois-records and identifies important information such as contact, registration date, expiration date, etc.

2.12              statistics

PlexDomain shows up-to-date statistics of number of domains that are registered, on-hold and deleted.

2.13              multiple documents interface (mdi)

PlexDomain allows users to view multiple searches at the same time.

2.14              individual link popularity

PlexDomain allows user to check popularity of an user-entered domain in various search engines and directories.

2.15              link ranking

PlexDomain allows user to check ranking of any domain using a specify keywords. Users can track ranking of their favorite sites using this tool.

2.16              keyword suggestions

PlexDomain allows user to check popularity of various keywords and suggest similar keyword and their popularity.

2.17              real-time keyword searches/top keywords

PlexDomain shows real-time keyword searches performed by the users on various search engines and shows top keywords at various search engines.

2.18              registration, monitoring and back-tracking

PlexDomain comes with links to a number of popular resources for registering, monitoring or back-tracking domains.

2.19              online resources

PlexDomain comes with links to a number of online resources related to trademark and standardization organizations.

2.20              resolve name

PlexDomain allows user to lookup a host-name in a naming service.

2.21              whois

PlexDomain allows users to view public information stored in Whois database for a particular host.

2.22              Rwhois

Some large ISPs also support Rwhois protocol to provide public information on their clients. PlexDomain allows users to search that public information for a particular host.

2.23              arin/RIPE/APNIC/AUNIC

Whois only allows search by host-name, many ISPs do not provide host-name for some IP-Addresses. Arin, Ripe, and other similar databases allow users to find owners of IP-addresses. PlexDomain has a smart algorithm to automatically use correct database for any IP-address user enters and shows public information of IPS.

2.24              mail exchange record

PlexDomain allows user to find list of mail servers for a particular host.

2.25              soa record

2

3                      installation

PlexDomain software is written purely in Java and it can be run on any platform where Java virtual machine is available. The installations for various platforms are available from:

http://www.plexobject.com/software/plexdomain/download.html

After downloading the appropriate installation file, follow the directions at the website for installation.

4                      domain lifecycle

Before using this software, it helps to understand the domain lifecycle. A domain’s lifecycle starts with the domain registration. A typical registration lasts for one-year. When the expiration date approaches, the owner receives a renewal notice. If the owner registers the domain before expiration, it remains registered. However if the owner fails to register, it is considered expired domain. A typical expiration period lasts from 1-45 days and registrar deletes the domain from its registry. After the domain is deleted from the registry, the email and website will no longer be accessible. After expiration, the domain is granted some redemption period of 30-days. The owner can still renew his/her domain during this. After this domain is permanently deleted which may take up-to fie days? After the domain is permanently deleted, it becomes available for registration by other people.

5.2                     starting a search

The first thing user will need to do is select domains. There are five primary mechanisms for searching domains:

5.2.1          keyword-based search

The option allows users to search domains by specifying keywords. In addition, user can narrow criteria by length of the domain or whether it can contain hyphens or numbers. To search keyword search, select

Domain->New->Domain Search

option from drop down menu.

These options allow users to search for most-valued domains. The value of a domain depends on its length, whether domain includes any numbers or hyphens, and most importantly brand. A strong, clear domain free of ties to other sites/businesses is the most valuable.

Figure 3

Select type of domains that you wish you choose. User can search domains that are either:

·         Deleted

·         Deleted or On-Hold

·         On-Hold

·         Expiring Soon

·         Newly Deleted

·         Available

·         Registration

After defining the criteria, click “Search” to start the search process. PlexDomain will start searching the domain and will display results of search in a table format.

5.2.2          browse real-time lists for newly-deleted domains

This option allows users to browse real-time list for newly-deleted domains. To start browsing, select

            Domain->New->Newly Deleted Lists

The user specifies the length of domain, whether it contains numbers or hyphens and top-level domain. After specifying the criteria, click “Fetch” to start the search.

Figure 4

5.2.3          directory crawling

This option allows users to crawl Yahoo or DMOZ directory, where it scans each category and check the domains that have expired. The job for directory crawling is run in background. It adds the expired domains to a file and notifies users. In order to schedule directory crawling job, select

            Domain->New->Schedule to crawl directories

from the drop-down menu.

Figure 5

The user can choose to schedule one-time or recurring jobs, which is scheduled at regular intervals such as every night at 2am.

5.2.4          importing domains

PlexDomain allows users to import list of domains from an external text file, which contains a domain name per line. In order to import domains, select

Domain->New->Domain Search

5.3                     filtering domains

Once, users has selected the domains, he/she can filter those domains based on their popularity. In order to filter domain, user will need to open the domains or select “Domain Popularity/Filtering” tab if it’s already opened. In order to open previously stored domains, select

Domain->Open->Check Popularity & Filter Domains

from the drop-down menu.

Then select all the search engines and directories where the number of links for each domain will be searched. You may also select the minimum Alexa Ranking. For example, if you wish to choose a site from top 100,000, then choose “Not Exceeds” next to Alexa Ranking and type in 100000. It will ensure that only those domains who are listed on Alexa and whose ranking is below or equal to 100,000 will be selected. Similarly in order to choose popular domains, select “Exceeds” next to “Overall Popularlity” and type the minimum number of links that you think are appropriate. PlexDomain will then add the number of links on all selected search engines and will select domain only if the total number of links equal to or exceed the number entered by the user. You may also choose to select domains only if they are registered under Yahoo-Categories by checking “Yahoo-Directory.” PlexDomain allows users to filter all available domains or only selected domains. PlexDomain will search the domain in search engines only if they are not previously initialized. Once a particular search engine is initialized, it will continue to use that value. In order to reset popularity for a particular domain or all domains, choose “Reset” buttons.

5.4                     power search for available domains

PlexDomain allows users to specify or load from an external file, a list of keywords, top-level-domains with a set of prefix and suffix words and it generates all possible domain names. It then checks each of those domains against whois server and shows list of available domains. The user can either search for available domains in foreground, where PlexDomain searches and displays the available domains, but user cannot perform other tasks while PlexDomain is searching. Alternatively, user can schedule a background job, which searches for available domains and then saves those domains. The results can also be emailed to the user when done.

However, this information is only available if the domain is “registered” or soon to expire. Once the domain is expired, the whois record is purged from the registry and will not be available. The user can search for whois-records for all domains or only selected domains. PlexDomain also parses whois-record and identifies important information such as contact, registration date, expiration date, etc. User can also export whois-records to an external XML file by selecting

File->Export Domains
